Ancient Athena relief in southern Turkey vandalised

A Graeco-Roman rock relief of the goddess Athena, located some two kilometres north of the village of Somek in Silifke (Greek Seleukeia) district of Mersin province in Turkey, near the valley of the Limonlu (Greek Lamos) river, has once again suffered severe damage at the hands of treasure hunters.

Some years ago the upper torso of the 2,000-year-old Athena Relief, was detonated with dynamite and the goddess' eyes were carved out.

Recently, five more holes have been drilled into the feet of the Athena Relief, possibly to accommodate dynamite.

Turkish officials have not commented on the matter.
