2019 excavations at ancient Lattara in southern France concluded

The excavation work on the archaeological site located in Lattes in southern France, located just on the outskirts of Montpellier, has been completed. The research carried out by about thirty students led to the discovery of a harbour, which is 2600 years old.

Located below sea level, the remains make it possible to reconstruct the port life of Lattara over the centuries.

"All the hypotheses on the existence of the port of Lattara have been confirmed', explains Bernard Travier, Vice-President of the Montpellier Metropolitan Area in charge of culture. "The channel through which the boats arrived at the port has been cleared and is visible. We can see the unloading docks, the piles to which the boats were moored and the stores in which the goods were deposited."

The excavations were the result of a collaboration between the metropolis, the French State and the the Occitanie Region. This important discovery highlights social life and commerce in Lattara before and after the Christian era.

An ancient port city, Lattara was discovered in 1963 by archaeologist Henri Prades. This city has seen Greeks, Iberians, Romans and local Gauls live side by side.

Another three-year work programme is already planned to study the remains of a possible watehouse that could be located just a stone's throw from the port.
