Erotic fresco uncovered in Pompeii

A spectacular, erotic ancient Roman fresco has been uncovered during new excavations at Pompeii, Massimo Osanna, the director of the archaeological site, told ANSA on Monday. The artwork portrays Jupiter taking the form of a swan to impregnate Spartan queen Leda.

The high quality fresco uncovered in a big house in the ancient city is rich in colour and highly explicit. "It's an exceptional, unique find," said Osanna.

  1. Osanna is wrong. Following Cicero and Cato, Jupiter didn't have a physical body. This is the Greek God Zeus.

  2. Zeus and Jupiter are the same god - as are Venus and Aphrodite...

    1. That is their historical equivalence as it is now taught. They are not culturally transparent. If it is Zeus, coupled with the Spartan Queen Leda, it may help to indicate the origin of the painting.
