Roman Villa of Positano finally opens to the public

Buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, it remained unknown until a few years ago. Today, after many setbacks, especially with regard to raising funds for restoration, the villa re-emerges.

The Roman Villa of Positano, on the Amalfi coast, houses archaeological finds of inestimable value like a series of frescoes of the first century AD.

The opening to the public is scheduled for 18 July this year.

There are no official announcements as yet, but the invitations of the Municipality of Positano, the Soprintendenza and the Diocese of Amalfi-Cava dè Tirreni are beginning to circulate.

The Villa is located below the church of Santa Maria Assunta, in front of the sea. Inside, ten metres deep, are frescoes on the walls, hippocampi, golden columns, griffons and a winged pegasus.

Considered the biggest archaeological discovery on the Amalfi Coast in recent decades, the large frescoed room was buried by a rain of ash and debris from the eruption of the Neapolitan volcano that razed Pompeii and Herculaneum to the ground.

Work on the villa was completed at the end of March last year. A walkway path and a lighting system have been created, which is also accessible to the handicapped.
