Two Roman funerary stelae revealed at Strasbourg tram construction site

Archaeologists have discovered two 2,000-year-old grave stelae during the course of rescue excavations at the construction site of the new Strasbourg tram line in Koenigshoffen.

The two well preserved stelae once marked the graves of two Roman legionnares from Legion VIII Augusta, established by Julius Caesar. They were moved in the 2nd or 3rd century, when the necropolis was replaced by houses.

Once the stelae are restored they will be exhibited in the archaeological museum of Strasbourg. The curator of the museum, Bernadette Schnitzler, awaits them with impatience: "They are really quite masterly pieces, we will find a place for them without any problems in the museum, even if we have to extend the walls!"

Their inscriptions will be studied by Antea Archaeology and a report produced within two years.
