New excavations started at the famous Heroon in Paestum

The excavations of the famous Heroon of Poseidonia have just begun in Paestum, a late Archaic monument located in the agora that was dedicated to the founder of the Greek city.

The excavation, by students of the University of Naples "L'Orientale" enrolled in degree courses in archaeological disciplines, are directed by Fabrizio Pesando, coordinated by Laura Ficuciello, and involves the exploration of a space never before investigated that is immediately outside the Roman enclosure. The aim is to verify the original layout of the monument and to reconstruct its various architectural phases.

The Heroon was discovered by Sestieri in 1954 in the urban area of the ancient city of Poseidonia-Paestum during the extensive excavations carried out after the war with the funding of the Cassa per il Mezzogiorno. The monument was the object of the most varied interpretations and for a long time has been known in literature as the 'Hypogeum Sacellum' of Paestum.

The interior housed a rich collection of precious bronze vases, spits and a large Athenian black-figure amphora of about 520–500 BC, now on display in the Paestum Museum. The results of the subsequent investigations were incorporated into a prestigious scientific publication (E Greco - D. Theodorescu, Poseidonia-Paestum II, L 'Agora, Rome 1983). In 1998 Laura Ficuciello supervised the study of all the material that had been discovered during the excavations conducted by the Sestieri inside the enclosure and that had remained unpublished.

"The revision of the monument and all the documentation available has allowed us to put forward some new hypotheses that need verification: among the unresolved problems, in particular, there is that relating to the original structure of the monument at the time of its construction (510 BC), in relation to an altar that was supposed to be on its front, to the east, and that has been recognized in some rows of stone that are currently incorporated into the Roman enclosure.

"From the resumption of the investigations in this sector of the site by the University of Naples", says professor Laura Ficuciello ,"very important results are expected: the survey to the east of the enclosure of the shrine, in short, aims to investigate the space between the monument explored in 1954 and the excavations carried out in the past immediately to the east, in order to reconstruct the history of this sector of the agora, the public space par excellence of the Greek polis."
