'Music in Antiquity' at the CaixaForum, Madrid

Together with the Louvre Museum and the Louvre-Lens Museum, La Caixa Foundation will present the first exhibition in Spain on music in ancient civilisations, from the Far East, Egypt, Greece and Rome.

'Music in Antiquity' at the CaixaForum, Madrid

The exhibition is presented as a journey through music in antiquity which reveals its role as a   complement to the sacred, as a source of magical effects beyond the aesthetic pleasure of listening and even as a legitimising power. It is a journey through a long period of history that enables visitors to listen to and understand the sounds of more than three thousand years of history.

Over 300 pieces from around twenty music institutions will be on display, some of which are so fragile that this will be the first time they are taken out of their  museum of origin. In addition to the fascinating collection of musical instruments found at archaeological excavations, there will also be numerous works of art and ritual elements with musical motifs. Thanks to audio devices, it will even be possible to hear how the most common instruments of antiquity sounded  as well as a reproduction of the oldest song known to date.

The exhibition will run until 16 September, 2017.
