Byzantine cemetery discovered at Sa Capelleta, Ibiza

Archaeologists have discovered a seventh century Byzantine cemetery on a private plot of land in Sa Capelleta, Ibiza, in Spain's Balearic Islands.

A total of nine skeletons were extracted from four reused graves. These correspond to five adults and four minors, buried in three graves. The fourth grave, which appeared to be empty, likely contained the remains of a very small child whose fragile bones were consumed by the acidity of the soil.

The archaeologist in charge of the excavation, María José Escandell, explained that the scant number of grave goods, which is limited to a small ceramic jug and some necklace beads, confirmed his first impression that it is a very humble rural family cemetery. The remains of the jar and the necklace will serve to date the find more accurately.

In addition to the four tombs, archaeologists also discovered a series of ditches opened up by farmers to plant trees. These ditches are later than the Byzantine burials, but a more accurate study will be required to determine when they were made.

Escandell believes that the cemetery is much larger, possibly extending to a parking lot next to the excavated area.
