The Infrastructure Ministry said the stone remains were found on the site of the former public latrine. The site was being excavated for the building of a new plant room as part of the restoration of the Tritons Fountain.

Further archaeological investigations are being carried out by the Superintendence of National Heritage. The remains will be protected and kept accessible.

The ministry said this find was unexpected. The remains could possibly have been a modification of original plans for the fortifications, added over time.
