According to legend Kiveri (ancient Apovathmi) was founded in 1600 BC by some of the first Dorian invaders of the Peloponnese.

Danaos, the founder of the city of Argos, one of the foremost Mycenaean cities of Peloponnese, is said to have anchored at the small port town of Kiveri.

The ancient temple of Genessios Poseidon was located in the area and a series of Mycenaean tombs and remains of an ancient settlement were also discovered at the site of Aghios Dimitrios.

Following an initiative of the local authorities the tombs will be restored and promoted with the aim of making them accessible to the general public.
