Submerged ancient ceramics workshop found in Delos

Ancient ruins and artefacts on the sea-bed just off the coast of the island of Delos were once believed to have been the remains of a dock. However a re-examination have led archaeologists to a different conclusion: that at the site an ancient pottery factory once stood on the edge of the shore.

The ruins are located at a depth of just 1.5 – 2 metres on the northeastern coast of Delos near the ancient Stadiou settlement and it is now believed that they are linked to trade and or manufacturing activity – in other words they are the remains of ab ancient pottery store and workshop.

The excavators came to the conclusion following the discovery of a built floor and the ordered arrangement of 16 miniature and semi-preserved amphoras together with an oven.

Similar workshops have been uncovered in Pompeii and Herculaneum in Italy.

In front of the remains of the pottery workshop large stones were placed in a line. The boulders were potentially once part of the eastern breakwater of the Stadiou settlement. Other remains of structural elements such as walls and fallen colonnades were identified as well as the remains of walls along the length of the coastline.

The research was conducted by the Ministry of Culture in coordination with the National Hellenic Research Foundation and the ministry’s Ephorate of Maritme Archaeology.
