The completed study, which was prepared by the Scientific Working Group of Kavala Municipality in collaboration with the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the local ephorates of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities and of Byzantine Antiquities, is awaiting final approval by the Greek Ministry of Culture.

The Ministry of Culture will present a candidature dossier in September at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris and in February 2015 the international organization will evaluate the submission.

The archaeological site of Philippi is inextricably connected not only with the glorious city founded by the Macedonian king Philip (356 BC), and the famous battle that determined the future of the Roman Empire (42 BC), but is also the first city on European soil to be visited by the Apostle Paul.
